Photojournalism.

This class called for an assortment of different photography assignments, ranging from sports, news, and fun skill projects. Below are a couple of my favorite images from each of these assignments.

Low Light.

The assignment required lowering the shutter speed in order to capture a low-light image with solid resolution and less noise. I immediately thought, “I already know how to lower the shutter and open the aperture to let in as much light as possible to the sensor. Why not shoot at lowlight and still try to capture action?”

The image to the left is of me skateboarding. I used my speedlite with a remote trigger.

As the shutter was open and I was completing the trick (kickflip), the camera captured all the ambient light in the scene, blurring any action, essentially making me invisible. To counter this, I pressed the remote trigger in my right hand. You can see it in the image.

With the power and brightness of the flash, it completely freezes the action of the shot.

Both images above were taken after a Duck Football game from the apartment building at the 959 Franklin.

Feature News.

This assignment called for capturing feature news. I got super lucky because just the week before this assignment was due, a LEGO convention was held at the Eugene Convention Center. Just my luck, two of my favorite things to spend my Saturday morning, LEGOs and Photography.

LEGO Builder, Owen Randle, displays his recreation of the Hougoumont Farm North Gate from the Battle of Waterloo at the annual Brick Convention at Lane Events Center in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday, November 1st, 2025.

As a LEGO fan and Star Wars nerd, photography this custom build was very exciting.

A custom LEGO recreation of the Theed Hangar from the Duel of Fates scene in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace by builder Amado Pinlac is showcased at the Brick Convention at the Lane Events Center in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday, November 1st, 2025. The recreation is featured in the fan section of the official LEGO Star Wars book.

Sports.

This assignment was designed to teach us how to capture powerful images at a sporting event.

The running back, #25, for the North Eugene Highlanders junior varsity team, gains two yards on the 2nd down, giving the North Eugene Highlanders four yards to reach the first down marker.

The Churchill Lancers JV wide receiver, #88, breaks free of the Highlanders' cornerback, #80, scoring the final touchdown of the game and securing the win. The outcome of the JV matchup between the Churchill Lancers and the North Eugene Highlanders, played at Churchill High School on October 13th, 2025, ends with Churchill winning 36-6.

Wild Art.

This assignment was very simple. If we see something we think is cool, take a photo of it. The subject has to be natural and not something you see every day.

A freight train comes to a halt on the bridge near Millrace Studios on November 15, 2025, in Eugene, Oregon.

A goose, one of two, floats across the Millrace waterway on a cold day in Eugene, Oregon, on October 30, 2025.

My Choice.

At the end of our term, our second-to-last assignment was our choice. We could choose one of the previous assignments we had done earlier in the class and do that again.

My obvious choice was experimenting with lowlight again. It’s just too much fun.
